Muntasir Mamun

Muntasir Mamun is a pioneering environmental advocate and researcher with extensive expertise in marine debris, waste management, and sustainability. He is the founder and moderator of Kewkradong Bangladesh, a prominent environmental advocacy group, and serves as the Country Coordinator for the International Coastal Cleanup under Ocean Conservancy, USA. Additionally, he is the National Coordinator (Ocean) for The Climate Reality Project (India & South Asia), USA.
Mamun’s research credentials include leading the Global Plastic Leakage to Ocean project in Bangladesh (2019–2020) in collaboration with CSIRO (The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Australia. His contributions to marine debris research have been highlighted through poster presentations at the 5th International Marine Debris Conference (IMDC) in Honolulu (2011) and active participation in the 6th and 7th IMDC. He has also completed specialized training, including “Marine Debris I: Macro-debris” with KIOST and OSEAN (2013), the “Land to Ocean” workshop by CSIRO and OSEAN (2017), and the NOWPAP-TEMM Joint Workshop on Marine Litter Management (2018).
An adventurer with a purpose, Mamun conducted tandem bicycle journeys across the United States (2012) and from Anchorage, Alaska, to Ontario, Canada (2014), during which he investigated roadside litter. His research on public transport mapping in Dhaka, Bangladesh, contributed to the MIT study Tracing a Path to Knowledge? (published in 2014).
Mamun’s work has been internationally recognized, earning the Connect4Climate special prize from the World Bank Group for his documentary Trashmaniac. His contributions include an episode on Bangladesh for HBO’s Saving My Tomorrow series and published articles on environmental issues in Marine Litter News (Asia Pacific Civil Forum on Marine Litter, Korea), The Daily Star, and a Bengali-language series on microplastics to raise local awareness. His groundbreaking study on the value chain of post-consumer PET bottles in Bangladesh underscores his dedication to sustainable waste management practices.
